ABOUT THE 2011 BMW 550I XDRIVE GRAN TURISMO
The 2011 BMW 550i xDrive Gran Turismo combines the 5 Series GT’s five-door hatchback body (F07) with BMW’s twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre N63 V8, rated at 400 hp and 450 lb-ft, and xDrive all-wheel drive. Power goes through an eight-speed automatic.
The most capable GT
The xDrive model was the range-topping Gran Turismo, pairing the V8 with all-weather traction. BMW’s xDrive system normally sends most of the torque to the rear axle but can redirect it forwards when the rear wheels lose grip. For buyers in cold climates, it offered the space of a large SUV-like hatchback with a lower, more car-like stance. You can read more in our explainer on FWD, RWD, AWD and 4WD drivetrains.
Cabin and space
The GT shares its 3,070 mm wheelbase with the standard-length 7 Series, so rear legroom is generous. The rear seats can slide and recline, and the two-part tailgate opens either as a conventional boot lid or as a full hatch. Equipment levels were high, with options such as a panoramic roof, head-up display and adaptive suspension.
Buying one today
This is a heavy, complex car, and running costs reflect that. The first-generation N63 V8 has commonly reported problems with oil consumption, valve-stem seals, timing chains, injectors and turbo-area oil leaks, many of which were covered by a BMW customer care programme. The xDrive transfer case, air suspension and electronics are also worth inspecting before buying.
Rivals
Possible alternatives included the Porsche Panamera 4S, the Mercedes-Benz CLS550 and the BMW X6 xDrive50i, or a large luxury SUV such as the Mercedes-Benz GL550.
