ABOUT THE 2012 BMW 550I XDRIVE GRAN TURISMO
The 2012 BMW 550i xDrive Gran Turismo is the V8, all-wheel-drive version of the 5 Series Gran Turismo (F07), a large five-door hatchback built on 7 Series underpinnings. Its 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged N63 V8 produces 400 hp and 450 lb-ft, sent through an eight-speed automatic to all four wheels.
An unusual 5 Series
The Gran Turismo went on sale in the US for 2010 as a crossover between a luxury saloon, an estate and an SUV. It shares its wheelbase and much of its structure with the F01 7 Series rather than the F10 5 Series saloon, and it was the first in the 5 Series family to use the eight-speed automatic. By 2012 the model was in its third year, with the six-cylinder 535i Gran Turismo below this V8 version.
Practicality
The F07’s party trick is its two-piece tailgate: the boot can be opened like a saloon’s lid or as a full hatchback. Rear passengers sit higher than in a 5 Series saloon and enjoy limousine-like legroom, and the rear seats can slide and recline. Visibility and sheer size can make it feel bulky in town, and its styling divided opinion.
Buying one today
The early N63 V8 is the main risk. Widely reported issues include excessive oil consumption, valve stem seal wear, timing chain problems, failed injectors and coils, and leaks from heat-damaged hoses. Many engines have had work under BMW’s N63 service programme. The rear air suspension and complex tailgate mechanism are also worth checking.
Rivals
The 550i xDrive Gran Turismo had few direct rivals; buyers also looked at the Porsche Panamera 4, Audi A7 3.0T quattro and Acura ZDX.
