ABOUT THE 2013 BMW 650I COUPE
The 2013 BMW 650i Coupe is the V8 version of the third-generation 6 Series coupe (F13), a two-door, four-seat grand tourer with rear-wheel drive. For 2013 its 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 was upgraded to 445 hp and 480 lb-ft, and it is paired exclusively with an eight-speed automatic.
What changed for 2013
The F13 coupe was new for 2012. In its second year the 650i gained the updated version of BMW’s twin-turbo V8 (up from 400 hp), automatic engine start-stop and better fuel-economy ratings, while the six-speed manual previously offered with the V8 was dropped. The 6 Series family also grew in 2013 with the arrival of the four-door Gran Coupe.
Grand touring character
The 650i is designed for long, fast journeys rather than track work. It rides on a 2,855 mm wheelbase, has a large boot for a coupe and offers comfortable front seats, though the two rear seats are best for shorter trips. Options included adaptive dampers and Integral Active Steering, and the six-cylinder 640i and the xDrive all-wheel-drive version sat either side of this rear-drive car.
Buying one today
BMW’s twin-turbo V8 family has a reputation for oil consumption, valve stem seal wear and heat-related failures of hoses, gaskets and turbo lines, as the turbochargers sit in the hot vee of the engine. The updated engine fitted to this car addressed some concerns, but a documented service history is essential. Battery and electrical health matter too on such a heavily equipped car.
Rivals
Competitors included the Jaguar XK, Mercedes-Benz E550 Coupe and Maserati GranTurismo.
