ABOUT THE 2013 AUDI RS 5

The 2013 Audi RS 5 is the high-performance version of the first-generation A5 coupe. Sold in Europe from 2010, it arrived in North America for the 2013 model year. Its 4.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 produces 450 hp and revs to around 8,250 rpm, driving all four wheels through a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission.

What it is like

The RS 5’s high-revving V8 is the highlight, with sharp throttle response and a dramatic sound. Its quattro system uses a crown-gear centre differential that normally sends more power to the rear, and an optional sport differential can direct torque between the rear wheels to help the car turn into corners. It seats four and remains practical for a performance coupe. An RS 5 Cabriolet was also introduced for 2013.

Buying one

Like other direct-injection engines, the 4.2 V8 suffers from carbon build-up on the intake valves, which can reduce performance and cause misfires if not cleaned. Make sure the S tronic gearbox fluid has been changed on schedule, and check tyres and brakes, which wear quickly on cars driven hard.

Rivals

Competitors included the BMW M3 Coupe (E92), Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Coupe and Cadillac CTS-V Coupe.
