ABOUT THE 2017 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER LE/XLE/SE/LTD
The 2017 Toyota Highlander is a mid-size, three-row SUV from the third-generation Highlander range that launched for 2014. The 2017 model year brought one of the most significant updates of that generation: a restyled front end, more standard safety equipment and a new V6 powertrain. This page covers the V6 versions in LE, XLE, SE and Limited trims.
What changed for 2017
The 3.5-litre V6 gained Toyota’s D-4S fuel system, which combines direct and port injection, lifting output to 295 hp and 263 lb-ft. It was paired with a new eight-speed automatic in place of the previous six-speed, and V6 models gained engine stop-start to save fuel in traffic. The 2017 Highlander also made the Toyota Safety Sense P package standard on every trim, adding pre-collision braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, automatic high beams and adaptive cruise control. A sportier SE trim joined the line-up with firmer suspension and darker styling.
Practicality
The Highlander seats seven with second-row captain’s chairs or eight with a bench. The third row is best for children or short trips, but the cabin is roomy and well thought out, with plenty of storage. With the V6, the Highlander is rated to tow up to 5,000 lb (about 2,270 kg). It was offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive; this entry covers the front-wheel-drive version. A Highlander Hybrid was also available.
Buying one
The Highlander has a strong reputation for reliability, and this generation is a popular used buy. As with any used car, check the service history, make sure all recalls have been completed (you can check by VIN), and look for wear consistent with the mileage — family SUVs often lead hard lives.
Rivals
Key competitors include the Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder, Mazda CX-9 and Hyundai Santa Fe. The tables below compare the Highlander with other 2017 SUVs in our database.
