ABOUT THE 2000 FORD RANGER PICKUP 4WD
The 2000 Ford Ranger 4WD is a compact pickup from the generation redesigned for 1998. This entry has the 4.0-litre overhead-valve V6, rated at 160 hp and 225 lb-ft (305 Nm), with part-time four-wheel drive. It covers the version with the five-speed automatic; a five-speed manual was also available.
Last year before the update
2000 was the final model year for this version of the Ranger. For 2001 Ford gave it a facelift and replaced this pushrod 4.0 with a more powerful overhead-cam 4.0 V6, so later Rangers have noticeably higher outputs. The 1998 redesign had already brought a longer cab and independent front suspension, and the four-door SuperCab, with small rear-hinged doors on both sides, had been available since 1999.
Practicality
Regular cab and SuperCab bodies were offered with different bed lengths. The 4.0 V6 was the strongest engine in the line-up and the usual choice for towing a small trailer or for regular off-road use.
Buying one today
The pushrod 4.0 is generally regarded as durable. Commonly reported issues include faults with the five-speed automatic, vacuum-operated front hub problems on 4x4s, and rust on the frame and around the bed.
Rivals
The Ranger competed with the Chevrolet S-10, GMC Sonoma, Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier and Dodge Dakota. Mazda sold a near-identical twin as the B-Series.
