ABOUT THE 2024 BMW X4 M COMPETITION
The 2024 BMW X4 M Competition is the high-performance version of the second-generation X4 (G02), known internally as the F98. It is a five-seat coupé-styled SUV powered by BMW M’s S58 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six, which in Competition form produces 503 hp and 479 lb-ft. Drive goes to all four wheels through the rear-biased M xDrive system and an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic, the only gearbox offered.
Late in the life cycle
The 2024 model belongs to the facelifted range introduced for 2022, which brought slimmer headlights, revised bumpers, a larger central screen and the uprated Competition tune as the only US version. By 2024 the X4 M was a mature product, built alongside the X3 M at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina.
What it is like
The S58 engine is closely related to the unit in the M3 and M4, and it gives the X4 M serious straight-line pace together with a sharp throttle response. The adaptive M suspension, large brakes and wide tyres make it far more focused than a regular X4, but the ride is firm even in its softest setting. The sloping roofline costs rear headroom and boot space compared with the X3 M, which is the more practical of the two.
Ownership points
Running costs are those of a full M car: big tyres and brakes wear quickly, and servicing is best left to a BMW specialist familiar with the S58.
Rivals
Alternatives in 2024 included the Porsche Macan GTS, Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio and Audi SQ5 Sportback, as well as BMW’s own X3 M Competition.
