The 2024 BMW 330e is the plug-in hybrid version of the seventh-generation 3 Series saloon (G20), in the facelifted form introduced for 2023. It pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with an electric motor built into the eight-speed automatic, for a combined 288 hp and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm). This entry is the rear-wheel-drive car.
How it works
A lithium-ion battery under the rear seat allows short trips on electric power alone, enough for many daily commutes. Once the battery is depleted the car runs as a conventional hybrid. A temporary “XtraBoost” function briefly raises output for overtaking, which is how the peak combined figure is reached.
Practicality
Packaging the battery costs some boot space and the fuel tank is smaller than in the 330i, so the 330e is at its best for owners who can charge at home and drive mostly short distances. Charging from a Level 2 wallbox takes a few hours.
Where 2024 sits
By 2024 the G20 had received its update, with the Curved Display and iDrive 8 inside and slimmer headlights and revised bumpers outside. The 330e remained the only plug-in hybrid in the US 3 Series line-up.
