ABOUT THE 2023 BMW M3 COMPETITION M XDRIVE SEDAN
The 2023 BMW M3 Competition xDrive is the all-wheel-drive version of the sixth-generation M3 (G80), BMW M’s high-performance version of the 3 Series saloon. Its 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six (the S58) produces 503 hp and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm), and is paired with an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic and the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system.
M xDrive
The M3 was traditionally rear-wheel drive, but for the G80 generation BMW added an all-wheel-drive option from the 2022 model year. M xDrive is rear-biased and sends power to the front wheels only when needed, so the car still feels like an M3. The driver can choose between a standard 4WD mode, a looser 4WD Sport mode, and a 2WD mode that disconnects the front axle entirely for track driving. The extra traction makes it significantly quicker off the line: BMW quotes 0–60 mph in about 3.4 seconds.
Living with it
Despite its performance, the M3 is a practical four-door saloon with seating for five and a usable boot. Adaptive suspension and selectable driving modes allow it to ride more comfortably on the road than earlier M3s. The large vertical kidney grille divided opinion when the G80 was launched, but the car was widely praised for its speed, grip and everyday usability.
Running costs
Fuel economy is modest — official US figures are in the high teens MPG combined — and tyres, brakes and servicing are expensive, as with any high-performance car. Buyers of used examples should check for track use, tyre wear and service records.
Rivals
Competitors include the Mercedes-AMG C 63, Audi RS 5 Sportback, Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing and Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.
