ABOUT THE 2022 BMW M3 COMPETITION M XDRIVE SEDAN
The 2022 BMW M3 Competition xDrive is the all-wheel-drive version of the sixth-generation M3 (G80) saloon. It is powered by the 3.0-litre S58 twin-turbocharged inline-six producing 503 hp and 479 lb-ft, with drive sent through BMW’s M xDrive system and an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic, the only gearbox offered with xDrive.
The first all-wheel-drive M3
The G80 M3 launched for the 2021 model year in rear-wheel-drive form, with either a six-speed manual in the standard car or the eight-speed automatic in the Competition. For 2022 BMW added M xDrive, making this the first M3 with all-wheel drive. The system is rear-biased and includes a 2WD mode that disconnects the front axle for traditional rear-drive handling, along with 4WD and 4WD Sport settings.
Performance
BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 3.4 seconds, quicker than the rear-drive Competition thanks to improved traction off the line. The top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (249 km/h), or higher with the optional M Driver’s Package. The G80 also attracted attention for its large vertical kidney grille, which divided opinion.
Living with it
The M3 remains a practical four-door saloon with seats for five and a usable boot. Adaptive suspension, multiple drive modes and configurable M buttons let owners choose between comfort and track settings.
Buying one today
The S58 is still relatively new, so long-term reliability data is limited. Look for evidence of regular servicing, check tyre and brake wear, and make sure the car has received all available software updates. Cars used on track may show more wear.
Rivals
Rivals included the Audi RS 5 Sportback, Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing.
