ABOUT THE 2022 BMW X5 M COMPETITION
The 2022 BMW X5 M Competition is the top performance version of the fourth-generation X5, coded F95 in M form. It uses BMW M’s S63 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with 617 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, driving all four wheels through the M xDrive system and an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic.
Where it sits
The F95 X5 M arrived for the 2020 model year in standard and Competition forms, and the 2022 car is a mid-cycle example of a settled range. The Competition adds 17 hp over the standard X5 M along with model-specific chassis tuning. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 3.7 seconds. A facelift for 2024 later brought a mild-hybrid V8. Like every X5, it was built in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
What it is like
M xDrive is rear-biased and includes a 4WD Sport mode, and an Active M Differential distributes torque across the rear axle. Adaptive M suspension, staggered wheels and M Compound brakes help a heavy SUV corner and stop with real composure. Inside, it keeps the X5’s roomy five-seat cabin and large boot.
Buying one today
Running costs are high: tyres, brakes and servicing are expensive, and the twin-turbo V8 needs careful maintenance with regular oil changes. Check for a complete service history and look for signs of oil or coolant leaks.
Rivals
Rivals included the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S, Porsche Cayenne Turbo, Audi RS Q8 and Lamborghini Urus.
