ABOUT THE 2022 BMW 745E XDRIVE
The 2022 BMW 745e xDrive is the plug-in hybrid version of the sixth-generation 7 Series (G12), sold in the US only in long-wheelbase form. It combines a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic, giving a combined 389 hp and 442 lb-ft (600 Nm), with xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 4.9 seconds.
The final year
The 745e replaced the four-cylinder 740e for the 2020 model year, at the same time as the 7 Series facelift that introduced the much larger kidney grille. 2022 was the last model year for both the 745e and the G12 generation; the all-new G70 7 Series that followed for 2023 did not initially include a plug-in hybrid in the US.
Life on board
The long wheelbase gives generous rear legroom, and the cabin is quiet and richly equipped. The six-cylinder engine is a big step up in refinement from the earlier 740e’s four-cylinder. The high-voltage battery under the rear seat allows short trips on electric power, but it raises the boot floor and reduces luggage space compared with petrol 7 Series models.
Buying one today
This is a complex car, combining air suspension, a hybrid drivetrain and extensive electronics, so a full dealer service history and a pre-purchase inspection are strongly advised. Check that the charging system works and ask about the battery’s remaining electric range.
Rivals
The 745e competed with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8 and Lexus LS 500h.
