The 2020 BMW 745e xDrive is a plug-in hybrid sedan. It has a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine producing 389 hp (290 kW), with an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. 0–60 mph takes 4.5 seconds and top speed is 155 mph (249 km/h).
ABOUT THE 2020 BMW 745E XDRIVE
The 2020 BMW 745e xDrive is the plug-in hybrid version of the sixth-generation 7 Series (G12), introduced alongside the 7 Series facelift for the 2020 model year. It combines a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic, for a combined system output of 389 hp and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm). Power goes to all four wheels.
New for 2020
The 745e replaced the four-cylinder 740e. Switching to a six-cylinder engine and a larger 12.0 kWh battery made it smoother and noticeably quicker, and it arrived with the facelifted 7 Series, recognisable by its much larger kidney grille and slimmer headlights. In North America it came only in long-wheelbase form, with a 3,210 mm wheelbase.
Electric running
EPA-rated electric range is 16 miles (about 26 km), enough for short commutes on electric power alone. Charging is by a standard on-board AC charger; there is no DC fast charging. The battery sits under the rear seat, which reduces boot space compared with petrol 7 Series models.
Buying one today
As with any complex luxury plug-in hybrid, check the charging equipment, the condition of the high-voltage battery and that the car switches cleanly between petrol and electric modes. The air suspension, large wheels and extensive electronics are expensive to repair, so a full service history and a warranty are worth seeking.
Rivals
Few luxury saloons of the time offered a plug-in option; the closest alternatives were the Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid and the Mercedes-Benz S560e.
