The 2022 BMW 540i xDrive Sedan is the six-cylinder, all-wheel-drive version of the seventh-generation 5 Series (G30) in its facelifted form. It uses a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with 335 hp and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, paired with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive.
A facelifted 5 Series
The G30 launched for the 2017 model year and received its mid-life update for 2021, with revised lights, a larger kidney grille and the addition of 48-volt mild-hybrid technology to the 540i. The 2022 car continued in that form, two years before the eighth-generation G60 arrived for 2024.
Character and practicality
The 540i xDrive is aimed at comfortable, fast long-distance driving. The inline-six is smooth and quiet, and the mild-hybrid starter-generator makes engine restarts less noticeable. All-wheel drive gives secure traction in winter conditions. The rear seat is roomy for two adults, and the boot is a good size for the executive saloon class.
