The 2021 BMW M440i xDrive Coupe is the top non-M version of the second-generation 4 Series coupe (G22), which made its debut for the 2021 model year. Power comes from a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, rated at 382 hp and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm), sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic.
A launch-year car
As the first year of the G22, the 2021 car introduced the 4 Series’ most debated feature: a large vertical kidney grille that clearly separated it from the 3 Series saloon. Underneath, it shares its platform and much of its technology with the G20 3 Series, but with a lower roof, wider rear track and its own suspension tuning.
Living with it
This is a two-door, four-seat coupe. The rear seats are usable by adults for shorter journeys, and the boot is a sensible size for the class.
