ABOUT THE 2020 BMW X6 XDRIVE40I
The 2020 BMW X6 xDrive40i is the six-cylinder version of the third-generation X6 (G06), which launched for the 2020 model year. It uses the B58 turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six rated at 335 hp and 330 lb-ft (450 Nm), with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 5.3 seconds.
A new generation
The G06 shares its platform, wheelbase (2,975 mm) and much of its interior with the G05 X5, but wears a sloping coupe-style roofline. For its launch year it brought a wider body, an available illuminated kidney grille, the iDrive 7 system with a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and centre screen, and an optional two-axle air suspension. The xDrive40i replaced the previous xDrive35i as the entry X6, with the V8 M50i above it.
Practicality
All X6s were built in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The fastback shape costs headroom in the rear and boot height compared with an X5, though there is still space for five and a good-sized load area. There is no third-row option.
Buying one today
The B58 has a strong reputation, but commonly reported items include coolant leaks from the expansion tank or plastic pipes and oil-filter-housing gasket seepage. On cars with air suspension, check that the car sits level and that no warnings appear. The large wheels fitted to many examples make tyres a significant running cost.
