ABOUT THE 2019 BMW 640I XDRIVE GRAN TURISMO
The 2019 BMW 640i xDrive Gran Turismo is a five-door fastback hatchback from the G32 generation, which replaced the 5 Series Gran Turismo and arrived in North America for the 2018 model year. It uses BMW’s turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six (B58) producing 335 hp and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm), with xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic.
Where it sits
Despite the 6 Series name, the GT is closely related to the G30 5 Series and G11/G12 7 Series rather than the 6 Series coupe. It rides on a 3,070 mm wheelbase and was built in Dingolfing, Germany. In North America the 640i xDrive was the only version offered, and the model had a short life in the US market.
Practicality
Practicality is the GT’s main appeal. The large tailgate opens to a boot of around 610 litres, expanding substantially with the rear seats folded, and rear passengers get generous legroom and headroom thanks to the high roofline. Air suspension at the rear is standard, helping keep the ride level with heavy loads.
Buying one today
The B58 engine has a generally good reputation. Items to check include coolant leaks from the expansion tank and the plastic coolant pipes, oil leaks from the oil filter housing gasket as the car ages, and the condition of the rear air springs. Make sure the infotainment and driver-assistance systems are working correctly.
Rivals
Direct rivals were few: the Audi A7 Sportback and the Porsche Panamera were the closest alternatives, while many buyers compared it with a BMW X5 or a large estate car.
