ABOUT THE 2018 BMW 640I XDRIVE GRAN TURISMO
The 2018 BMW 640i xDrive Gran Turismo is the launch-year version of the G32 6 Series Gran Turismo, a large five-door liftback built in Dingolfing, Germany. It uses BMW’s B58 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six rated at 335 hp and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm), with xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic.
A new name for the GT
The G32 replaced the F07 5 Series Gran Turismo (sold in the US as the 535i GT) and moved into the 6 Series family for the 2018 model year. It is based on the G30 5 Series platform but uses a longer 3,070 mm wheelbase and a high, sloping roofline with a large tailgate. Compared with the old 5 GT, it is lower and sleeker, and it lost the F07’s distinctive split tailgate in favour of a simpler single hatch.
Comfort and space
The GT was designed as a comfortable long-distance car. Self-levelling rear air suspension was standard, and the elevated seating position and generous rear legroom set it apart from conventional sedans. The cargo area is larger than the 5 Series sedan’s boot and expands considerably with the rear seats folded.
Buying one today
The B58 inline-six is regarded as one of BMW’s more dependable modern engines, though coolant leaks and oil filter housing gasket seepage are commonly reported as mileage builds. Check the rear air springs for leaks or sagging and test the power tailgate.
Rivals
Direct rivals were few. Buyers might also have considered the Audi A7 Sportback, Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon or a crossover such as the BMW X5.
