The 2019 BMW 640i Gran Coupe is a coupe. It has a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine producing 315 hp (235 kW), with an 8-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive. 0–60 mph takes 4.9 seconds and top speed is 155 mph (249 km/h).
ABOUT THE 2019 BMW 640I GRAN COUPE
The 2019 BMW 640i Gran Coupe is the six-cylinder version of the four-door 6 Series Gran Coupe (F06), and 2019 was the final model year for this body style before the 8 Series Gran Coupe took its place. It uses BMW’s turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six (N55) rated at 315 hp and 330 lb-ft (450 Nm), driving the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic. An xDrive all-wheel-drive version was also offered.
A final year
The Gran Coupe joined the 6 Series range for the 2013 model year, adding two rear doors and a longer 2,968 mm wheelbase to the coupe’s low, frameless-window design. By 2019 the two-door 6 Series coupe and convertible had already ended production, leaving the four-door Gran Coupe as the last of the line.
What it is like
The 640i is a grand tourer rather than a sports saloon: smooth, quiet and long-legged, with the six-cylinder giving ample performance. Rear seating is more usable than in the coupe, although the low roofline limits headroom for tall passengers, and the centre rear position is very tight.
Buying one today
The N55 is a well-understood engine; commonly reported items include oil leaks from the valve-cover and oil-filter-housing gaskets, the electric water pump and thermostat, and ignition coils. Check that all the electronics work, including the infotainment system and any optional comfort features, as these can be costly to fix.
Rivals
Comparable four-door coupes on sale in 2019 included the Mercedes-Benz CLS, the Audi A7 and the Porsche Panamera.
