The 2018 BMW Alpina B6 xDrive Gran Coupe is Alpina’s high-performance take on the four-door 6 Series Gran Coupe (F06). Its 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 is tuned by Alpina to 600 hp and 590 lb-ft, driving all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic with Alpina’s Switch-Tronic buttons on the steering wheel.
A different kind of fast BMW
Alpina works closely with BMW but takes a different approach from BMW M. Instead of a hard-edged track focus, the B6 aims for effortless, high-speed touring: huge torque, a supple ride and a distinctive interior trimmed in fine leather and wood, with Alpina’s classic multi-spoke wheels and optional decor stripes outside. In the US it was sold through BMW dealers.
Late in the model’s life
By 2018 the F06 Gran Coupe was in the later years of its run, with the 8 Series Gran Coupe waiting in the wings as its successor. The B6 had already received its power increase to 600 hp, making it one of the most powerful cars in the 6 Series family and a rival in pace to the M6 Gran Coupe, but with all-wheel drive and a softer character.
Buying one today
The twin-turbo V8 shares its basic design with BMW’s N63 family, which is known for oil consumption, valve-stem seal wear and heat-related wear in the turbo area. Low production numbers mean some Alpina-specific parts can be hard to source, so a specialist inspection is wise.
