ABOUT THE 2018 BMW 330I XDRIVE SPORTS WAGON
The 2018 BMW 330i xDrive Sports Wagon is the petrol estate version of the sixth-generation 3 Series (F31). It is powered by the B46 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 248 hp and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm), paired with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive, which was standard on the US wagon.
Where it sits
The 3 Series wagon was a rarity in the US, offered here only with all-wheel drive. The 330i badge and the newer four-cylinder engine replaced the 328i as part of the F30/F31 range update. For 2018 the wagon was available as this petrol model and as the 328d xDrive diesel. The next 3 Series generation did not bring a wagon to the US, so these cars have become sought after by estate enthusiasts.
Practicality
The wagon offers the same cabin as the saloon but adds a much more versatile load area, with a powered tailgate, a separately opening rear window and 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats. Roof rails are standard. It keeps the 3 Series’ agile handling while adding the traction of xDrive for winter use.
Buying one today
The B46 and its close relative B48 are regarded as relatively durable. Issues owners report include oil filter housing gasket and coolant leaks. Check the transfer case for smooth operation, the tailgate struts and motor, and the condition of the run-flat tyres, which are often replaced with conventional tyres.
Rivals
Rivals included the Audi A4 allroad, the Volvo V60 and V90 Cross Country, and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon at a larger size.
