ABOUT THE 2017 BMW 330I XDRIVE SPORTS WAGON
The 2017 BMW 330i xDrive Sports Wagon is the estate version of the facelifted sixth-generation 3 Series (F31). It uses the new B46 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, rated at 248 hp and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm), with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive.
New for 2017
For the 2017 model year the 330i replaced the 328i across the 3 Series range, with the B46 engine succeeding the N20. Power went up by 8 hp, and the new engine is part of BMW’s modular family shared with the 340i’s six-cylinder. The wagon also carries the styling and equipment changes of the 3 Series’ 2016 mid-life update.
Practicality
The Sports Wagon is the most practical car in the 3 Series line-up. It offers about 495 litres of boot space with the rear seats up and around 1,500 litres with them folded, and the 40:20:40 split rear backrest allows long items to pass through while keeping rear seats in use. A separately opening rear window gives quick access to the boot. The 2,810 mm wheelbase is the same as the saloon’s.
Buying one today
The B46 has a better reliability reputation than the N20 it replaced. Reported issues are mostly typical of modern BMWs, including oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks and coolant-system wear. Check the tailgate struts and the all-wheel-drive system’s service history.
Rivals
Premium compact estates were rare in the US by 2017. The main alternatives were the Audi A4 allroad, the Volvo V60 and V60 Cross Country, and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon for those wanting more space.
