ABOUT THE 2017 BMW X5 XDRIVE40E
The 2017 BMW X5 xDrive40e is the plug-in hybrid version of the third-generation X5 (F15). It pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor built into the eight-speed automatic transmission, giving a combined 308 hp and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm). Power goes to all four wheels through xDrive, and the EPA rated its electric-only range at 14 miles (about 23 km).
Where it fits
The xDrive40e was BMW’s first plug-in hybrid SUV and joined the X5 line-up for the 2016 model year, so the 2017 car is its second year on sale. Like other X5s it was built in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It sat between the six-cylinder xDrive35i and the V8 xDrive50i, offering short electric commutes and quiet urban driving with petrol back-up for longer trips.
Practicality
The lithium-ion battery sits under the boot floor, which raises the floor and reduces luggage space compared with other X5s, and the optional third row was not available. Charging from a household outlet takes several hours; a Level 2 charger shortens that considerably. Once the battery is depleted, fuel economy is closer to a conventional six-cylinder X5 than a small car.
Buying one today
Check that the high-voltage system shows no warnings and that the car charges correctly, and ask about any battery-related software updates. The N20 engine family is known for timing-chain guide wear on early units, so listen for rattles at start-up.
Rivals
Rival plug-in SUVs included the Volvo XC90 T8, Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid and Mercedes-Benz GLE 550e.
