ABOUT THE 2017 BMW ALPINA B7 XDRIVE
The 2017 BMW Alpina B7 xDrive is the Alpina-developed flagship of the sixth-generation 7 Series (G12), sold in North America only in long-wheelbase form. 2017 was its launch year. Alpina’s version of the twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 produces 600 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm), driving all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic with Alpina’s own shift programming.
How it differs from a 750i
Alpina fitted larger turbochargers, uprated cooling and its own calibration to the V8, along with retuned air suspension, specific 20- or 21-inch wheels. Alpina quoted 0–60 mph in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of about 193 mph, making it a genuine high-speed autobahn cruiser rather than a track-focused M car. Inside, it gets Alpina-specific trim, badging and digital instrument graphics.
Character
The B7 was intended to sit between the 750i and the V12 M760i, prioritising effortless performance and ride comfort. Its 3,210 mm wheelbase gives generous rear legroom, and the long list of standard luxury features carries over from the top 7 Series trims. Cars were built by BMW in Dingolfing and finished by Alpina in Buchloe, Germany.
Buying one today
Running costs are high: the twin-turbo V8 is known for oil and coolant leaks as it ages, and air-suspension components, large wheels and tyres, and the complex electronics are all expensive to replace. Specialist knowledge of Alpina-specific parts is worth seeking out.
Rivals
Comparable cars were the Mercedes-AMG S63 4MATIC, the Audi S8 plus and the Porsche Panamera Turbo.
