ABOUT THE 2017 BMW 440I XDRIVE GRAN COUPE
The 2017 BMW 440i xDrive Gran Coupe is the six-cylinder, all-wheel-drive version of the 4 Series Gran Coupe (F36), a four-door coupe-style car with a large hatch-type tailgate. It uses the B58 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six, rated at 320 hp and 330 lb-ft (450 Nm), paired with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive.
Where 2017 sits
The 440i name, and the B58 engine, arrived across the 4 Series for 2017, replacing the 435i and its N55. That makes this the first year of the 440i xDrive Gran Coupe, and the only year before the 4 Series’ 2018 facelift. It sits at the top of the Gran Coupe range, above the 430i models, as there was no M version of this body.
Practicality
The Gran Coupe combines the low roofline of the 4 Series Coupe with four doors and a powered tailgate. The hatch opening makes the boot (about 480 litres) easier to load than a saloon’s, and the rear seats fold for longer items. Rear headroom is a little tighter than in the 3 Series saloon because of the sloping roof.
Buying one today
The B58 is regarded as robust, with coolant and oil filter housing leaks among the more frequently reported problems. Check the power tailgate, and on cars with the M Sport package, look at the wheels and run-flat tyres for damage.
Rivals
Its most direct rival was the Audi S5 Sportback, which reached the US for the 2018 model year; other alternatives included the Mercedes-AMG C43 saloon and the Audi S4.
