ABOUT THE 2017 BMW 340I
The 2017 BMW 340i is the six-cylinder 3 Series saloon in the second year of the F30’s facelifted form. It uses the B58 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six, rated at 320 hp and 330 lb-ft (450 Nm), and drives the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the eight-speed automatic; a six-speed manual and the all-wheel-drive 340i xDrive were also available.
What changed for 2017
The 340i itself carried over largely unchanged after its 2016 debut, but the range around it moved on: the four-cylinder 330i, with the new B46 engine, replaced the 328i, so both main petrol engines in the 3 Series now came from BMW’s modular engine family. The 340i remained the top non-M saloon, sitting below the M3.
The performance picture
The B58’s broad torque band gives effortless acceleration, and the car can be ordered with the M Sport package, adaptive dampers and variable sport steering for a sharper feel. Rear-wheel drive gives the purest balance of the range.
Buying one today
The B58 is widely considered a durable engine. Things to check include coolant leaks around the expansion tank and hoses, oil filter housing gasket seepage, and the condition of run-flat tyres, which are expensive and affect ride quality. Cars with a documented service history are worth seeking out.
Rivals
For 2017 the 340i competed with the Mercedes-AMG C43, the newly launched Alfa Romeo Giulia, the Jaguar XE S, the Lexus IS 350 and the Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400.
