ABOUT THE 2017 BMW 340I XDRIVE
The 2017 BMW 340i xDrive is the six-cylinder, all-wheel-drive version of the sixth-generation 3 Series saloon (F30) in its facelifted form. It uses BMW’s B58 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six, rated at 320 hp and 330 lb-ft, and this entry covers the version with the eight-speed automatic; a six-speed manual was offered on the rear-drive 340i.
Second year of the B58
The 340i replaced the 335i for the 2016 model year, when the F30 received its mid-life update and the older N55 engine gave way to the new modular B58. The 2017 car continued with only detail changes.
What it is like
The 340i xDrive combines strong performance with good refinement and all-weather traction, and the eight-speed automatic is smooth and responsive. Rear legroom and boot space are typical for the class, and the saloon seats five.
Buying one today
The B58 has a good reputation for durability. Commonly reported issues include coolant leaks from the expansion tank or coolant lines and oil leaks from the oil filter housing gasket as mileage rises. The xDrive transfer case should be checked for noises, and mismatched tyres can harm it.

Rivals included the Mercedes-AMG C43, Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400, Lexus IS 350 F Sport and Cadillac ATS 3.6.
