The 2016 BMW Z4 sDrive28i is the four-cylinder version of the second-generation Z4 (E89), a two-seat roadster with a folding aluminium hardtop. It uses the N20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, rated at 240 hp and 260 lb-ft (350 Nm), and drives the rear wheels. The final year
2016 was the last model year for the E89 Z4, which had been on sale since 2009. There was then a gap in the US until the third-generation G29 Z4 arrived for 2019, so the 2016 sDrive28i marks the end of the hardtop era for BMW’s roadster. The sDrive28i was the entry model, below the six-cylinder sDrive35i and sDrive35is.
Roof and practicality
The two-piece hardtop folds electrically into the boot, giving a coupe-like cabin with the roof up and better security and refinement than a fabric hood. Boot space is reduced with the roof down. The cabin is strictly two seats and the long bonnet and short rear give the classic roadster stance.
Buying one today
N20 engines are known for timing-chain guide wear, though later builds such as these are thought to be less affected than early examples. Oil leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing are also commonly reported. Check the roof mechanism and its hydraulics, and look for water leaks into the cabin.
