ABOUT THE 2013 BMW Z4 SDRIVE28I
The 2013 BMW Z4 sDrive28i is the four-cylinder version of the second-generation Z4 (E89), a two-seat roadster with a folding aluminium hardtop. Its 2.0-litre N20 turbocharged engine produces 240 hp and 260 lb-ft, driving the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the eight-speed automatic; a six-speed manual was also offered.
Where it fits
The E89 Z4 replaced the soft-top E85 for 2009, initially with six-cylinder sDrive30i and sDrive35i models. The sDrive28i took over from the sDrive30i for 2012, so 2013 was its second year. It offered nearly the same power as the outgoing six but with more low-down torque and better economy. Above it sat the sDrive35i and the more powerful sDrive35is. Unlike earlier Z4s, the E89 was built in Regensburg, Germany.
Roadster and coupe in one
The two-piece retractable hardtop folds electrically into the boot, giving coupe-like refinement and security with the roof up. Luggage space shrinks considerably when it is lowered. The cabin is more upmarket than the E85’s, with better materials and an optional iDrive screen.
Buying one today
The N20’s timing chain guides are a widely reported weak point, and oil leaks from the oil filter housing gasket are also common. Check that the roof operates smoothly and that its seals are not letting water in.
