The 2016 BMW X4 xDrive35i is the six-cylinder version of the first-generation X4 (F26), a coupe-styled SUV based on the X3 and built in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It uses the 3.0-litre N55 turbocharged inline-six with 300 hp and 300 lb-ft, xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic, the only transmission offered.
Second year on sale
The X4 was launched for the 2015 model year as a smaller sibling to the X6, offering the same idea of a sloping, coupe-like roofline on a high-riding body. For 2016 the range grew with the arrival of the X4 M40i, a more powerful model above the xDrive35i, while the four-cylinder xDrive28i remained the entry point.
Style versus space
The X4 shares much of its engineering and dashboard with the facelifted X3, but its lower roof reduces rear headroom and boot space. Rear passengers sit slightly lower than in the X3 to compensate. The trade-off is a sportier look and a slightly lower driving position.
Buying one today
As with other N55-engined BMWs, look for oil leaks from the oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets, electric water pump and thermostat failures, and cracks in the plastic charge pipe. Check the transfer case and confirm that the tyres are matched, as xDrive is sensitive to differences in tread depth.
