ABOUT THE 2015 BMW X4 XDRIVE35I
The 2015 BMW X4 xDrive35i is the six-cylinder version of the first-generation X4 (F26), BMW’s coupe-styled crossover based on the X3. It uses the turbocharged 3.0-litre N55 inline-six with 300 hp and 300 lb-ft (400 Nm), an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. Like other BMW X models of the era, it was built in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
The launch year
2015 was the X4’s first model year in the US. It followed the larger X6 in combining SUV ride height with a sloping, fastback roofline. Two versions were offered at launch: the four-cylinder xDrive28i and this more powerful xDrive35i. A higher-performance M40i followed later.
Practicality
The X4 shares its platform and much of its dashboard with the X3, but the lower roofline cuts rear headroom and boot height. It still seats five and has a powered tailgate, and its cargo area is useful for everyday loads, if smaller than the X3’s. Buyers who prioritise space were usually steered towards the X3.
Buying one today
The N55’s known weak points include oil leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets, and failures of the electric water pump and thermostat. Check that the transfer case operates smoothly and that tyres are matched, as the xDrive system is sensitive to uneven tyre wear.
