ABOUT THE 2016 BMW 535I
The 2016 BMW 535i is the six-cylinder petrol version of the sixth-generation 5 Series saloon (F10), in what was the final model year for this generation. It uses the N55 3.0-litre single-turbo inline-six with 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque and drives the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the eight-speed automatic; xDrive all-wheel drive was also available.
The end of the F10
Launched for the 2011 model year, the F10 was facelifted for 2014 with revised headlights and tail lights and updated equipment. By 2016 the line-up was mature, and for 2017 the 535i was replaced by the 540i in the new G30 generation, which switched to the B58 engine. A 2016 535i is therefore a well-developed example of the outgoing car.
What it is like
The F10 leaned more towards comfort than earlier 5 Series, with a quiet cabin, a supple ride and plenty of rear space. The turbocharged six gives brisk, effortless acceleration and relaxed motorway cruising at low engine speeds. Options such as Dynamic Handling Package and M Sport sharpened the driving experience.
Buying one today
Known N55 weak points include valve cover and oil filter housing gasket leaks, failures of the electric water pump and thermostat, and ignition coil wear. Check that the electronics, including iDrive and parking sensors, work correctly.
