ABOUT THE 2016 BMW 535I XDRIVE
The 2016 BMW 535i xDrive is the all-wheel-drive, six-cylinder version of the sixth-generation 5 Series (F10), in its final model year. It uses a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six producing 300 hp, an eight-speed automatic and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system.
Where it fits
The 535i sat in the middle of the 5 Series range, above the four-cylinder 528i and below the V8 550i, and many buyers considered it the best balance of performance, refinement and running costs. The F10 generation, launched for 2011, was larger and more comfort-focused than the E60 it replaced, with a quiet, high-quality cabin and a smooth ride. A mid-life update for 2014 refreshed the lights and equipment.
For 2017 the all-new G30 5 Series arrived, and its six-cylinder model was renamed 540i, so the 2016 535i is the last of its line.
xDrive
xDrive sends most of the power to the rear wheels in normal driving and shifts torque forward when grip runs short, which makes the 535i xDrive a confident all-weather car without dulling its handling much. It adds some weight and a small fuel-economy penalty compared with the rear-drive 535i.
Buying one
Known issues on BMW’s turbocharged sixes of this era include oil leaks from the oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets, electric coolant pump failures and turbo wastegate rattle. Check that the electronics, including iDrive and driver-assistance features, all work, and favour cars with a complete service history.
Rivals
The 535i xDrive’s main competitors were the Mercedes-Benz E400 4MATIC, Audi A6 3.0T quattro, Lexus GS 350 AWD and Jaguar XF AWD.
