The 2013 BMW 535i xDrive is the six-cylinder, all-wheel-drive version of the sixth-generation 5 Series saloon (F10). It uses a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six producing 300 hp and 300 lb-ft, with xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic.
Where 2013 sits
The F10 went on sale for the 2011 model year, so 2013 was its third season and the last before the mid-life facelift. The updated car for 2014 brought revised styling, new headlight options and a diesel 535d to the North American range. A 2013 535i xDrive therefore represents the original F10 design, with the same N55 engine that later cars kept.
What it is like
The F10 placed more emphasis on comfort and refinement than the E60 it replaced, with a quieter cabin, more conventional styling and a larger, easier-to-use iDrive system. The rear-biased xDrive system gives secure traction in poor weather without much effect on the car’s balance. It is roomy for four adults and has a large boot, making it a capable long-distance car. Buying one today
Commonly reported issues with the N55 engine include electric water pump and thermostat failure, oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks, and fuel injector problems. The F10’s extensive electronics and optional adaptive suspension can be expensive to repair, so a pre-purchase inspection is worthwhile.
