ABOUT THE 2016 BMW 328I XDRIVE GRAN TURISMO
The 2016 BMW 328i xDrive Gran Turismo is the four-cylinder version of the 3 Series Gran Turismo (F34), a five-door hatchback built on a stretched 3 Series platform. It uses the N20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, rated at 240 hp and 255 lb-ft (350 Nm), with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive, which was standard on the US-market 3 Series GT.
Where 2016 sits
The 3 Series GT joined the US range for 2014. The 2016 model year was the last for the 328i badge here: for 2017 the GT received its mid-life update and the new B46-engined 330i xDrive Gran Turismo replaced it, alongside the 340i xDrive GT. A 2016 car is therefore an N20-engined, pre-facelift example.
Practicality
The GT’s 2,920 mm wheelbase is 110 mm longer than the 3 Series saloon’s, and it rides higher, so rear legroom is close to 5 Series levels and getting in and out is easy. The powered tailgate opens a large boot of about 520 litres, rising to roughly 1,600 litres with the rear seats folded. An active rear spoiler deploys at speed.
Buying one today
The N20 is known for timing-chain guide wear on earlier builds, so listen for a rattle at cold start and check whether the chain has been replaced. Oil leaks from the oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets are also commonly reported, as are coolant-system parts as the cars age.
Alternatives
Few cars matched its shape directly. Buyers also looked at BMW’s own 328i xDrive Sports Wagon, the Audi A4 allroad and the Volvo V60 Cross Country.
