ABOUT THE 2016 BMW 228I XDRIVE
The 2016 BMW 228i xDrive is the all-wheel-drive version of the four-cylinder 2 Series Coupe (F22). It is a two-door coupe with four seats. It uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 240 hp, with xDrive all-wheel drive and the eight-speed automatic, the only gearbox offered with xDrive on this model.
Final year of the 228i name
All-wheel drive joined the 2 Series range for the 2015 model year, and 2016 was the last year for the 228i badge. For 2017 BMW replaced it with the 230i, which used a new 2.0-litre engine with slightly more power. A 2016 228i xDrive therefore represents the original engine in its final form.
What it offers
The appeal is a compact premium coupe with all-weather traction. The xDrive system is rear-biased, so the car retains much of the 2 Series’ handling character while giving extra grip in rain and snow. Performance is brisk, with BMW quoting 0-60 mph in the mid-five-second range. The rear seats are tight for adults on long journeys but useful for short trips. Our guide to drivetrain types explains how this compares with rear-wheel drive.

Known weak points of this engine family include timing chain guide wear on earlier engines, oil leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing gasket, and electric coolant pump failure. Check that the xDrive system operates smoothly with no binding on tight turns.
