ABOUT THE 2015 BMW 228I XDRIVE
The 2015 BMW 228i xDrive is the all-wheel-drive version of the 2 Series Coupe (F22), the compact two-door that replaced the 1 Series Coupe. It uses BMW’s N20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, rated at 240 hp and 255 lb-ft (350 Nm), and in the US it came only with the eight-speed automatic.
New for 2015
The 2 Series Coupe went on sale in the US for 2014 with rear-wheel drive only. For 2015 BMW added xDrive all-wheel drive to the 228i, giving buyers in snowy climates a compact BMW coupe with four-wheel traction. The same year also brought the 2 Series Convertible to the range.
What it is like
Compact dimensions and a 2,690 mm wheelbase make the 228i agile, and the turbocharged four-cylinder gives brisk performance with good economy. It is a strict four-seater with two doors: the rear seats are usable for adults on short journeys, and the boot is reasonably practical for a car of this size. The xDrive system remains rear-biased in normal driving, so the car keeps much of the rear-drive feel.

Early N20 engines are known for timing-chain guide wear, which shows up as a rattle on start-up and should be addressed promptly. Oil leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets are also commonly reported.
Rivals
Rivals included the Audi A3 2.0T quattro, the Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 4MATIC and, for those willing to give up the badge, the Volkswagen GTI.
