ABOUT THE 2016 BMW 228I CONVERTIBLE
The 2016 BMW 228i Convertible is the soft-top version of the first-generation 2 Series (F23), a compact four-seat luxury convertible. Its N20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder produces 240 hp and 255 lb-ft (350 Nm), driving the rear wheels. This entry covers the rear-drive car with the eight-speed automatic.
The 2016 model year
The 2 Series Convertible arrived for the 2015 model year as the successor to the 1 Series Convertible, so 2016 was its second year. It was also the final year of the 228i name, as BMW switched to the 230i with the new B46 engine and a little more power for 2017. The convertible sat alongside the 228i Coupe and the six-cylinder M235i.
Living with it
BMW chose a fabric roof rather than a folding hardtop, which keeps weight down and leaves more boot space when the roof is open. The roof operates electrically and can be used while driving at low speeds. The rear seats are suitable for children or short trips, and they fold to extend the load space. The compact size and rear-drive balance make it enjoyable on twisting roads.
Buying one today
The N20 engine is commonly reported to suffer from timing chain guide wear, particularly on early production units, so listen for a rattle on start-up and check service records. Oil leaks from the oil filter housing and valve cover gasket are also known. Inspect the roof fabric, seals and drainage channels for leaks.
Rivals
Rivals in 2016 included the Audi A3 Cabriolet and the Ford Mustang EcoBoost Convertible, while the larger Audi A5 Cabriolet offered more space for a similar purpose.
