ABOUT THE 2015 BMW 228I CONVERTIBLE
The 2015 BMW 228i Convertible is the four-cylinder soft-top version of the first-generation 2 Series (F23). It uses the turbocharged 2.0-litre N20 engine, rated at 240 hp and 255 lb-ft, and drives the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the eight-speed automatic.
New for 2015
The 2 Series replaced the 1 Series in the US, with the coupe arriving for 2014 and the convertible following for the 2015 model year. Compared with the 128i Convertible it succeeded, the F23 is longer and wider, with more interior space, a larger boot and a turbocharged four-cylinder in place of the old naturally aspirated six. The six-cylinder M235i Convertible sat above it in the range.
What it is like
The fabric roof folds electrically and can be operated at low speeds, and the car has four seats, with the rear best suited to children or short journeys. The N20 is punchy and economical, and the eight-speed automatic suits relaxed top-down cruising. A rigid structure and rear-wheel drive give it a sportier feel than most small convertibles.
Buying one today
The N20 engine’s best-known weak point is wear of the timing chain guides, which can be noisy and, if neglected, cause serious damage; check whether updated parts have been fitted. Oil leaks from the oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets are also commonly reported. Inspect the roof, seals and drains for leaks.

Rivals included the Audi A3 Cabriolet and Mini Cooper S Convertible.
