ABOUT THE 2015 BMW X3 XDRIVE28D
The 2015 BMW X3 xDrive28d is the diesel version of the second-generation X3 (F25), a compact SUV built in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It uses a 2.0-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder producing 180 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, with xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic, the only gearbox offered.
Facelift year
The xDrive28d joined the X3 range for the 2014 model year, and for 2015 the X3 received its mid-life facelift. The update brought revised headlights that join up with the kidney grille, new bumpers and an updated cabin, alongside the existing xDrive28i and xDrive35i petrol models. A rear-wheel-drive sDrive28i was also added that year.
Economy and character
The diesel’s strength is its low-rev torque and economy. EPA ratings were around 27 mpg city and 34 mpg highway (about 8.7 and 6.9 L/100km), clearly better than the petrol X3s, and it gives the X3 a long touring range. Acceleration is more modest than the petrol models, but the torque makes it relaxed when towing or fully loaded.
Buying one today
As with most modern diesels, the exhaust after-treatment system needs attention: the diesel particulate filter, EGR valve and the urea-based SCR system (which uses diesel exhaust fluid) are the parts most commonly reported to cause trouble, especially on cars used mainly for short trips. BMW’s four-cylinder diesels of this family are also known for timing chain wear, so service history is important.
Rivals
Diesel rivals included the Audi Q5 TDI and Mercedes-Benz GLK250 BlueTEC.
