ABOUT THE 2013 BMW ALPINA B7 SWB
The 2013 BMW Alpina B7 SWB is the standard-wheelbase version of Alpina’s high-performance take on the fifth-generation 7 Series (F01), sold in the US through BMW dealers. Its Alpina-developed 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 produces 540 hp and 538 lb-ft, and this entry covers the rear-wheel-drive version with the eight-speed automatic; xDrive all-wheel drive and a long-wheelbase body were also offered.
Updated for 2013
The 2013 model year brought the B7 in line with the facelifted 7 Series. Output rose from the earlier 500 hp and 516 lb-ft, and the previous six-speed automatic gave way to an eight-speed unit, operated manually through Alpina’s Switch-Tronic buttons on the steering wheel. Alpina completes the cars at its own facility in Buchloe, Germany.
Character
Rather than the hard-edged approach of a BMW M car, the B7 is tuned as a fast, refined long-distance saloon. Large multi-spoke Alpina wheels, a front spoiler, discreet badging and optional pinstripes identify it outside, while the cabin features fine leather and Alpina instrument graphics. The standard-wheelbase car is slightly more compact and agile than the Li-based version, but still roomy for four adults.
Buying one today
The B7 shares much of its hardware with the 750i, so the same commonly reported issues apply: oil leaks, cooling system faults and turbo-related repairs on the V8, plus costly air suspension and electronic problems. Alpina-specific parts can be harder to source, so specialist knowledge is valuable.
Rivals
Competitors included the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG, Audi S8, Jaguar XJ Supersport and Porsche Panamera Turbo.
