ABOUT THE 2013 BMW 550I XDRIVE
The 2013 BMW 550i xDrive is the V8, all-wheel-drive saloon of the sixth-generation 5 Series (F10). It is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 (N63) producing 400 hp and 450 lb-ft, with xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
The last pre-facelift year
2013 was the final model year before the F10’s mid-life update. For 2014 the 550i received the revised N63TU engine with 445 hp, together with LED-detailed lights, updated bumpers and a refreshed cabin. The 2013 car therefore keeps the original V8, which sat at the top of the regular 5 Series saloon range below the M5.
What it is like
The 550i xDrive is a fast, refined long-distance saloon, with the V8’s torque arriving from low revs and the all-wheel-drive system giving secure traction in poor weather. The F10’s 2,968 mm wheelbase gives generous rear legroom, and the boot is large enough for family luggage. Options included adaptive dampers, active roll stabilisation, Integral Active Steering and a head-up display.
Buying one today
The original N63 V8 is the main concern. Widely reported problems include high oil consumption, valve-stem seal wear, timing-chain stretch, fuel-injector and ignition faults, and heat damage to hoses and wiring in the engine’s “hot V”. BMW addressed many of these through a dealer service programme, so check that the updates are recorded. Electronic faults and worn suspension bushes are other costly items.
Rivals
The 550i xDrive competed with the Mercedes-Benz E550 4MATIC, the Audi S6 and the Jaguar XF Supercharged.
