ABOUT THE 2012 BMW 535I XDRIVE GRAN TURISMO
The 2012 BMW 535i xDrive Gran Turismo is the all-wheel-drive six-cylinder version of the 5 Series Gran Turismo (F07), BMW’s five-door hatchback with a high roofline and a fastback tail. It is powered by the N55 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with 300 hp and 300 lb-ft, paired with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive.
Mid-life model
By 2012 the F07 was in its third model year, sharing much of its technology with the F10 5 Series saloon and the F01 7 Series, including the latest iDrive and optional driver aids such as a head-up display and surround-view cameras. Its unusual shape was not changed until the facelift that came later, and the model was eventually succeeded by the 6 Series Gran Turismo.
Space and comfort
The car’s main appeal is comfort: a long wheelbase, easy-access higher seating and generous rear legroom. The split tailgate lets owners open only the lower section for small items, and the rear bench folds to extend the boot. xDrive adds secure traction for drivers in snowy climates, at the cost of extra weight.
Buying one today
Commonly reported faults include N55 oil leaks, the electric coolant pump, the rear air suspension, xDrive transfer case issues and electronic problems such as failing control modules. Because of its complexity, a pre-purchase inspection by a BMW specialist is worthwhile.
Rivals
Comparable alternatives included the Audi A7 3.0T quattro (new for 2012), the Mercedes-Benz E350 4Matic wagon and the Acura ZDX.
