ABOUT THE 2012 BMW 335IS CONVERTIBLE
The 2012 BMW 335is Convertible is the most powerful non-M version of the E93 3 Series convertible, a four-seater with a three-piece folding steel hardtop. It uses the N54 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six tuned to 320 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, with an overboost function that briefly raises torque to 370 lb-ft, and it drives the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission; a six-speed manual was also offered.
Where it sits
The 335is was added to the E92 coupe and E93 convertible range for the 2011 model year, sitting between the 335i and the V8-powered M3. Alongside the extra power it brought an M aerodynamic kit, a more aggressive cooling set-up and sportier interior details. By 2012 the 3 Series saloon had already moved to the new F30 generation, but the coupe and convertible continued in E92/E93 form until the 4 Series replaced them.
Practicality
The folding hardtop gives the E93 the refinement of a coupe with the roof up, but stowing it takes up a significant part of the boot. The rear seats are usable for adults on shorter trips, which is a strength over most two-seat rivals.
Buying one today
As an N54 car, commonly reported problems include high-pressure fuel pump and injector failures, turbo wastegate rattle, electric water pump failures and oil leaks. On the convertible, check that the roof operates smoothly and that the hydraulic system and seals show no leaks.
Rivals
Rivals included the Audi S5 Cabriolet, the Infiniti G37 Convertible and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet.
