The 2012 BMW 335i Coupe xDrive is the all-wheel-drive six-cylinder coupe of the E92 3 Series. It uses the N55 3.0-litre single-turbo inline-six with twin-scroll technology, rated at 300 hp and 300 lb-ft, and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system. A coupe outliving its saloon
For 2012 the 3 Series saloon moved to the new F30 generation, but the coupe and convertible continued in E92 and E93 form. The coupe had been facelifted for 2011, when it gained revised headlights, LED tail lights, a new front bumper and the N55 engine in place of the twin-turbo N54. The 3 Series coupe was later renamed the 4 Series, so the E92 was the last coupe to carry the 3 Series badge.
Living with it
xDrive gives the 335i Coupe year-round traction and makes the most of the turbo engine’s low-rev torque in poor weather. The cabin seats four, with two individual rear seats, and the boot is reasonable for a coupe. The xDrive system adds weight but retains a rear-biased feel.
Buying one today
Commonly reported N55 problems include oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks, electric water pump failure and occasional turbo wastegate rattle. On xDrive cars the transfer case and its actuator motor are known weak points, and mismatched tyre wear can stress the system.
