The X6 launched for the 2008 model year, creating a new niche with its sloping roofline and four individual seats. For 2011 the xDrive35i replaced the twin-turbo N54 with the N55 and its six-speed automatic with an eight-speed unit, changes that made the car smoother and more efficient. The V8 xDrive50i, the high-performance X6 M and the ActiveHybrid X6 sat above it.
Practicality
The X6 sacrifices rear headroom and boot height for its coupe-like silhouette, so it is less practical than the related X5. The X6 was conceived as a four-seater, and many cars have two individual rear seats rather than a bench. Dynamic Performance Control, which actively distributes torque between the rear wheels, was available to sharpen handling.
Buying one today
Widely reported N55 issues include electric water pump failure and oil leaks from the oil filter housing, valve cover and oil pan gaskets. Check the transfer case and, if fitted, the Dynamic Performance Control rear differential, as well as the front control-arm bushings, which wear on these heavy vehicles.
