ABOUT THE 2011 BMW ALPINA B7 LWB
The 2011 BMW Alpina B7 LWB is the Alpina-developed high-performance version of the fifth-generation 7 Series in long-wheelbase form (F02). Its twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 is tuned by Alpina to 500 hp and 516 lb-ft, and this version drives the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic with Alpina’s Switch-Tronic buttons on the steering wheel.
Who builds it
Alpina is a small German manufacturer in Buchloe, Bavaria, that has worked closely with BMW for decades. The B7 was sold through BMW dealers in the US, built on BMW’s production line and then completed with Alpina’s engine changes, suspension tuning, wheels and interior details. The F02-based B7 succeeded the E65-based model and was offered in both standard and long-wheelbase forms, and with optional xDrive.
What sets it apart
Rather than a harsh sports car, the B7 aims to be a very fast, relaxed luxury car. The engine runs Alpina’s own tuning with higher turbo boost, and Alpina’s distinctive multi-spoke wheels, front spoiler, badging and optional pinstripes set it apart from a regular 750Li. The 3,210 mm wheelbase gives the rear seats limousine-like space.
Buying one today
The B7’s engine is based on BMW’s first-generation N63 V8, so the same commonly reported weak points apply: oil consumption, valve-stem seals, timing chains, injectors and heat-related leaks. Alpina-specific parts such as wheels and trim can be harder to source. Insist on a documented service history.
Rivals
Its rivals were the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG, Jaguar XJ Supersport and BMW’s own 760Li.
