ABOUT THE 2011 BMW 750LI
The 2011 BMW 750Li is the long-wheelbase V8 model in the fifth-generation 7 Series (F02). It uses BMW’s twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre N63 V8, rated at 400 hp and 450 lb-ft, and drives the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic.
Mid-cycle position
The F01/F02 7 Series launched for the 2009 model year, and 2011 sits in the middle of its run. All-wheel-drive xDrive versions had joined for 2010, so this rear-drive 750Li is the traditional layout. The six-speed automatic was still used on V8 models at this point; the eight-speed unit was fitted to the 760Li and spread to the rest of the range with the facelifted 2013 models.
Comfort and space
The long-wheelbase body stretches the wheelbase to 3,210 mm, with the extra length going almost entirely into rear legroom. The cabin was a big step forward from the E65/E66, with a simpler iDrive system and a more conventional dashboard layout. Options included rear-seat entertainment, night vision, a head-up display and Integral Active Steering.
Buying one today
Ownership costs can be high. The first-generation N63 has well-documented problems, including excessive oil consumption, valve-stem seal wear, timing-chain issues, injector faults and heat damage to seals around the turbos. Many cars received updates under a BMW customer care programme. Air suspension, soft-close doors and other electrical systems should also be checked.
Rivals
The 750Li competed with the Mercedes-Benz S550, Audi A8 L, Jaguar XJL and Lexus LS 460 L.
