ABOUT THE 2011 BMW 335I
The 2011 BMW 335i sedan is a late example of the fifth-generation 3 Series (E90). For 2011 it adopted the new N55 3.0-litre inline-six, which uses a single twin-scroll turbocharger in place of the earlier engine’s two turbos, still rated at 300 hp, with 300 lb-ft of torque. It drives the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the six-speed automatic; a six-speed manual was standard.
What changed for 2011
The switch from the N54 to the N55 was the key change this year. The new engine added Valvetronic variable valve lift to the turbocharged six and was designed to be simpler and more refined, while keeping the same headline power figure. The sedan had already received its facelift for 2009, so styling was largely unchanged. The E90 sedan continued through 2011 before the F30 replaced it for 2012.
Practicality
The 335i seats five, with a reasonable boot for the class and a split-folding rear seat available. Run-flat tyres were standard, so most cars have no spare wheel, and the firm ride on larger wheels is worth considering if your roads are poor.
Buying one today
The N55 is generally considered more reliable than the N54, but commonly reported problems include electric water-pump failure, oil leaks from the oil-filter-housing and valve-cover gaskets, and occasional fuel-injector or ignition-coil faults. Check the condition of the suspension bushings and that the infotainment works correctly.
