ABOUT THE 2009 BMW 335I
The 2009 BMW 335i is the top regular model of the fifth-generation 3 Series saloon (E90). It is powered by the N54 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six, rated at 300 hp and 300 lb-ft, with rear-wheel drive. This entry covers the version with the six-speed automatic; a six-speed manual was also offered, and the 335i xDrive provided all-wheel drive.
Facelift year
For the 2009 model year the E90 saloon received its mid-life update, with reshaped headlights, tail lights and bumpers, plus a revised interior. The iDrive system was also updated with a new controller and shortcut buttons. The same year, the 335d brought a turbodiesel to the US 3 Series range. The N54 engine stayed in the 335i saloon until the single-turbo N55 replaced it for 2011.
What it is like
The twin-turbo six gives the 335i strong mid-range pull and made it one of the quickest saloons in its class at the time. Steering and balance follow the usual 3 Series formula, and the saloon offers four doors, a usable back seat and a reasonable boot, though run-flat tyres make the ride firm on rough roads.
Buying one today
The N54 has several widely reported weak points: high-pressure fuel pump failures (for which BMW extended warranty coverage), turbocharger wastegate rattle and oil leaks, fuel injector problems, electric water pump and thermostat failures, and leaking oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets. Check that injectors and pump updates have been carried out.
